Isle of Palms Family Portrait: Robinette Family
Shooting on the beach is always an adventure. Sometimes you get perfect calm weather and gorgeous light. Sometimes you get an incredible sunset reflecting off the water. Sometimes you get a photobomber in a Speedo. Or sometimes you get gale force winds that give you 80s hair band hair.
When I did the Robinette family portrait out on the Isle of Palms, we got epic winds that unfortunately were blowing everyone’s hair INTO their faces if we had the sun at their backs so no one had to look into the glare. Fortunately, however, this family had a wonderful attitude so we used it as an opportunity to get creative. The wind died down considerably as you got closer to the dunes, so we used that as an opportunity to get some sweet portraits and fun candids in the sand and on the stairs of a nearby home. (How about that lime green, y’all?)
We had a wonderful time working our way through all the combinations of family and I think the adults had the most fun with the jumping photos at the end. Oh, and a helpful hint when dealing with toddlers? If asking them to say “cheese” is falling on deaf ears, try telling them to yell “cheeseburger” instead. I have no idea why but it almost always works like a charm.
The most important part when going into a family portrait is being able to go with the flow, which this family did in spades. We got a great mix of that traditional family beach portrait look, candid moments, and fun, goofy pictures, and I hope they’ll enjoy these photos for years to come.
