Volunteer Work: Surfer's Healing August 22, 2019

Surfer’s Healing is proof that magic is real in this world. I experienced it for the first time last year (I had a lot to say about my eye-opening and life-changing experience here, on a personal passion blog you’ll rarely see referenced in my professional life, and I deeply hope you’ll give it a read) and while I did not, unfortunately, have as much time to devote to One Perfect Day this year, it was equally as powerful an experience for the short time I was able to give.

If you’ve never heard of Surfer’s Healing, the concise explanation is this, as quoted from Wikipedia:

“Surfers Healing is a non-profit organization that teaches children with autism to surf. It was founded by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz for the benefit of their son Isaiah Paskowitz who was diagnosed with autism at age three. Surfers Healing seeks to enrich the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to surfing. The surf camps are free of charge to autistic children.”

And that is a solid, simple explanation for a complex, beautiful thing. Surfer’s Healing is a relief from the incredible day-to-day grind and overwhelming pressures of life; Surfer’s Healing is, for so many, a breakthrough, a connection, a lightning bolt of beautiful human connection in a complicated world; Surfer’s Healing is a beautiful day of community coming together to support, uplift, challenge, respect, celebrate, and become family.

It is an honor to tell this story, no matter how small a piece of it I was able to capture.

You should support Surfer’s Healing nationally here, connect with Surfer’s Healing Folly Beach here, and absolutely clear as much time as you can to volunteer in whatever capacity you’re able for 2020. It will change your life, I promise.

My photos and, more importantly, the journey from 2018 can be found here.
