Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art: Southbound Opening
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is an amazing force in the Charleston art scene and when they asked me to photograph the opening reception of Southbound: Photographs of and About the New South I was pretty thrilled. Anytime I get to take in contemporary art and photograph good people, it’s a great night over here!
What I didn’t expect, however, was how versatile the space at the Halsey actually can be. The gallery needed more wall space to showcase the exhibition - which features a really incredible and extensive body of photographs - so they erected temporary walls throughout, making the space more of a journey than the traditional gallery.
Highlights of the night were a beautiful gospel choir performance which paired perfectly with the theme of the exhibit and another vocal performance from the Taylor Music Group.
I can’t wait to go back without a camera to take in all the work without distractions. If you’re in the Charleston area, make a point to drop by the Halsey and check out Southbound!
